Google's cheapest model per tier (bold) against the four cheapest same-tier models from other providers, by output price.

Budget at the post-intro price

Gemini 4 Argon's intro rate runs through Nov 30, 2026 and then doubles to $4/$20 per 1M (cache reads $0.20). Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.6 Flash share an intro price through Dec 31 that also doubles on Jan 1, to $1.50/$7.50. If you're signing off a 2027 budget now, double the Gemini rows in the cost table below. Requests to the retired Gemini 3.7 Flash and 3.5 Flash are now routed automatically to 3.8 Flash and 3.6 Flash. They're billed at the newer models' rates, so check that the old model ids in your code are giving you the output you expect.

Free tier vs paid tier: the data trade-off

Google's pricing page lists free input and output tokens for Gemini 3.8 Flash, 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite and the 2.5 Pro, Flash and Flash-Lite models, with limited access. Gemini 4 Argon and the Gemini 3.1 Pro preview have no free tier. The catch is data use: Google marks free-tier content as used to improve its products, while paid-tier usage is not, for most models. Prototype on the free tier with synthetic or public data, and move anything containing customer data to a paid key.

Batch and context caching

Every text model on Google's pricing page has a Batch rate at half the standard input and output price. Context caching works differently from Anthropic's. There's no write premium in our data, but on top of the cache-read rate ($0.075 on 3.8 Flash) Google charges an hourly storage fee for every 1M cached tokens on most models (Gemini 4 Argon lists implicit caching only, with no storage fee). Caching pays off when many requests hit the same prefix within a short window. A large document that sits cached for hours between occasional questions can cost more than resending it.

Long prompts: Argon vs the older Pro models

Gemini 3.1 Pro and 2.5 Pro raise their rates once a prompt passes 200K tokens: 3.1 Pro goes to $4/$18 and 2.5 Pro to $2.50/$15. Our data lists no such threshold for Gemini 4 Argon. At its intro price it charges the same $2.00 input as 3.1 Pro's base rate, with cheaper output ($10.00 vs $12.00). For 300K-token document jobs, Argon is the cheaper Pro-class choice until its price rises.

§ FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Gemini API cost (Gemini API Kosten)?

Paid rates run from $0.10 input / $0.40 output per 1M tokens on Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite to $2.00 / $12.00 on Gemini 3.1 Pro. The newest flagship, Gemini 4 Argon, is $2.00 / $10.00 on an intro price that ends Nov 30, 2026. The Batch API halves those rates, and most Flash models can be used free with limits.

Is the Gemini API free?

Partly. Google offers a free tier with free input and output tokens on most Flash and Flash-Lite models and on Gemini 2.5 Pro, with limited access. Free-tier content may be used to improve Google's products. Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 3.1 Pro are paid only.

Why does our table say Gemini 3.8 Flash is "AI Pro/Ultra only"?

That note refers to the Gemini app, where 3.8 Flash is reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. In the Gemini API, Google's pricing page lists gemini-3.8-flash on both the free and the paid tier. The paid rate is $0.75 / $3.75 until Dec 31.

Gemini API vs OpenAI and Claude: which is cheapest?

At the mid tier, Gemini 3.8 Flash ($0.75 / $3.75) costs less than GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5, both at $2.00 / $10.00, even after its January increase. At the top, Gemini 4 Argon's intro price matches those mid-tier models, well below GPT-6 Astra ($50.00 output) and Claude Opus 5.5 ($20.00). At the budget end, GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5 are priced close to Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite.
