Cursor vs Kiro

Both are agentic IDEs, and the difference is the workflow. Kiro, from AWS, drafts requirements and a design first, then has parallel agents write the code and run tests; AWS positions it as the successor to Amazon Q Developer. Cursor lets agents edit across files straight from your prompt. They're also sold very differently: Kiro on monthly credit tiers, Cursor only inside X's Grok/Premium bundle.

§ Quick answer

The short answer.

Pick Kiro ($20/mo) if you're on AWS, want a spec and tests before code, and like a plain credit allowance — 1,000 credits a month on Pro, with premium models. Pick Cursor if you prefer prompting agents straight into edits and would use Grok and X Premium too; Plus ($8/mo) is Grok-only, and Claude/GPT start on Premium ($30/mo), billed separately.

§ Verdict

Which one should you buy?

Pick Cursor if…

you want fast prompt-to-edit agent work and the X bundle (Grok, X Premium) is something you'd pay for anyway.

Pick Kiro if…

your team builds on AWS, wants agents to plan a spec and run tests before writing code, and prefers a predictable monthly credit count.

Credits drain on both

Kiro's own history is a warning: AWS added usage caps and a signup waitlist within days of the 2025 preview after cost backlash, and premium-model credits still go quickly on real work. Cursor's catch is different — the model you probably want, Claude or GPT, is a separate API-priced bill on top of the subscription. Estimate a month of real use before committing to an upper tier of either.

§ FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Is Kiro cheaper than Cursor?

At the bottom, no: Cursor Plus ($8/mo) costs less than Kiro Pro ($20/mo), but Plus is limited to Grok models. Kiro Pro includes premium models within its 1,000 monthly credits.

Does Kiro have a free plan?

Yes: 50 credits a month with open-weight models and Claude Sonnet 4.5, rate-limited. Cursor's free plan has limited agent and chat requests.

Is Kiro the same as Amazon Q Developer?

No, it's a separate spec-driven IDE, but AWS positions Kiro as Q Developer's successor and is migrating Q Developer users to it.
