§ API model comparison

Grok 4.7 vs Claude Opus 5.5 API pricing

On the rate card Grok 4.7 is the cheaper flagship by a wide margin. On cache-heavy agent work and very long prompts, Claude Opus 5.5's pricing structure closes much of that gap.

§ Short answer

The short answer

Grok 4.7 costs half as much as Claude Opus 5.5 on input and about a third on output. But Opus 5.5's cache hit ($0.20) is cheaper than Grok's ($0.50), and Opus has no surcharge above 200K tokens — so for coding agents and long-document work the difference is far smaller than the headline suggests.

Standard rates per 1M tokens from data on this site. The coding-agent row assumes 90% of input is read from the prompt cache (full input price where a model has no cache rate). § Verdict

Which one should you use?

Choose Grok 4.7 if…

your prompts stay under 200K tokens and your workload is output-heavy — chat, drafting, bulk generation — where its $6.00 output rate keeps costs low.

Choose Claude Opus 5.5 if…

you run agents that re-read a large cached context, send prompts between 200K and 1M tokens, or need more than Grok's 500K window.

Cache-heavy work flips part of the advantage

Anthropic bills Opus 5.5 cache hits at 5% of input; xAI's Grok 4.7 cache hit is 25% of its input. When 90% of a coding agent's input is cached, Opus 5.5 pays less than Grok for those cached tokens; Grok stays ahead overall on its cheaper uncached input and output. Opus charges $5.00 per 1M tokens to write the cache, which Grok does not list.

Above 200K tokens

Once a Grok 4.7 prompt reaches 200K tokens, every token in that request is billed at double the rate — input then equals Opus 5.5's $4.00, and output is still below Opus. Anthropic bills Opus 5.5's full 1M window at standard rates. Grok 4.7 cannot take requests beyond 500K tokens.

Batch and scheduling

Anthropic's Batch API halves Opus 5.5's input and output rates, and stacks with caching. xAI offers a Batch API for batch-enabled models with reduced pricing, but its docs don't list a rate on the page we checked — confirm Grok 4.7's batch eligibility on its model page before planning around it.
