Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 Astra are both flagships, but Astra's output costs several times more per token. Both apply a long-context surcharge, at different thresholds, and Grok's window is half the size.
Grok 4.7 is 5× cheaper on input and about 8× cheaper on output than GPT-6 Astra. Its prompt cache discount is shallower and its context window is 500K versus Astra's 1M, so jobs that need more than half a million tokens in one request only fit Astra.

Grok 4.7 is 5.0× cheaper on input tokens ($2.00 vs $10.00 per 1M). Grok 4.7 is 8.3× cheaper on output tokens ($6.00 vs $50.00 per 1M).
| Workload | Grok 4.7 | GPT-6 Astra | Difference |

Standard rates per 1M tokens from data on this site. The coding-agent row assumes 90% of input is read from the prompt cache (full input price where a model has no cache rate). Cache-write fees, batch discounts and long-context surcharges listed in the notes are not included. Updated November 2, 2026.
your workload is output-heavy and fits in 500K tokens — long generations, summarisation at scale, high-volume chat — where its $6.00 output rate matters most.
you need more than 500K tokens in a single request, rely on OpenAI's platform, or your evals show Astra completing tasks with fewer retries.
Reasoning models can emit long chains of output tokens. At $6.00 versus $50.00 per 1M output tokens, an output-heavy pipeline costs roughly an eighth on Grok 4.7. On input-heavy work such as document Q&A the gap is closer to 5×.
Grok 4.7 doubles every rate once a prompt reaches 200K tokens — xAI's docs say the higher rate applies to all tokens in that request, cached input included. Astra's higher band starts above 272K and is 2× on input but 1.5× on output. Between 200K and 272K tokens only Grok is surcharged, and past 500K only Astra can take the request at all.
Grok 4.7's cache hit ($0.50) is a quarter of its input price, with no cache-write fee listed. Astra's cache hit ($1.00) is a tenth of its input, but it charges $12.50 to write a 30-minute cache. In absolute terms Grok's cached tokens are still cheaper, which is why its coding-agent cost stays well below Astra's.
Yes: $2.00 vs $10.00 per 1M input tokens and $6.00 vs $50.00 per 1M output tokens.
When a prompt reaches 200K tokens, all tokens in that request are billed at double the standard rate. GPT-6 Astra's higher band starts above 272K tokens.
500K tokens, versus 1M for GPT-6 Astra.
