Deprecated: plan your migration now

Mistral marked Medium 3.5 (mistral-medium-3-5, version 26.04) deprecated on October 31, 2026, with retirement on April 30, 2027, and recommends Mistral Large 4 for new work. Mistral Large 3 is on the same schedule. Earlier Medium versions are already gone: Medium 3 and 3.1 retired on August 31, 2026, with Medium 3.5 as their replacement. If you're integrating today, test on Large 4 first; if you're already on Medium 3.5, you have until the end of April 2027, but budget time to re-run evaluations.

Output is the expensive side

At $7.50 per 1M output tokens against $1.50 input, generation-heavy jobs (code generation, long reports) are where Medium 3.5 bills add up. It also costs more than the older Mistral Large 3 ($0.50 / $1.50) on both input and output. Mistral's Batch API cuts prices by 50% for jobs that can wait, and Mistral says cached input tokens can cut input cost by up to 90% on repeated prompts; the cost tables here use standard rates without either discount.

Open weights and features

Medium 3.5 was released as open weights under a Modified MIT license, so retirement from Mistral's API doesn't have to mean losing the model: you can keep running it on your own hardware or through another host. On the API it supports function calling, structured outputs, predicted outputs, document Q&A, reasoning and batch processing through /v1/batch.
