Cursor vs GitHub Copilot

Both put frontier models in your editor, but they ask different things of you. Cursor wants you to move into its own IDE in exchange for stronger agents; Copilot stays inside the editor and GitHub workflow you already have, for half the entry price.

§ Quick answer

The short answer.

Cursor ($20/mo) is the better tool if you want an AI that carries multi-file changes on its own. GitHub Copilot ($10/mo) is half the price, works in VS Code, JetBrains and GitHub, and is the safer pick if you mostly want completions, chat and PR reviews.

§ Verdict

Which one should you buy?

Pick Cursor if…

you want the AI to plan and carry out whole multi-file changes, and you're happy to switch to a VS Code-style editor to get it.

Pick GitHub Copilot if…

you want a capable assistant for the least money, inside JetBrains or VS Code, with AI reviews on your GitHub pull requests.

Start on Copilot's free tier; move to Cursor Pro only when you find yourself wanting the agent to do the whole job.

Both now meter usage, so read the limits

Cursor moved Pro to usage-based limits in 2025, and heavy users report running into them. Copilot switched every paid seat to credit-based billing in June 2026: unlimited plain completions, but premium-model requests draw down a monthly credit balance. If you lean on agents and top models all day, compare Cursor Pro+ against Copilot Pro+ rather than the entry plans.

§ FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Is Cursor better than GitHub Copilot?

For agentic, multi-file editing, yes: Copilot's agent mode still trails dedicated agentic editors like Cursor. For completions, chat and PR reviews inside your existing editor, Copilot does the job for less.

Which is cheaper, Cursor or Copilot?

Copilot. Its Pro plan is $10/mo against $20/mo for Cursor Pro, and Copilot's business seat ($19/mo) undercuts Cursor Teams Standard ($40/mo).

Can I use Claude models in both?

Yes. Cursor Pro includes all frontier models, and Copilot Pro lets you choose between Claude, GPT and Gemini; Opus access on Copilot starts at Pro+.
